Commercial License in Dubai
A Commercial License in Dubai is granted for business activities that involve the buying / selling of goods, commodities and or services. Examples of businesses that require a Commercial Trade License include retail outlets, trading establishments, real estate brokerages, logistics companies, and educational / training institutions.
With a single Commercial Trade License, an entity may undertake up to ten allied business activities. A Commercial Trade License is granted by the Department of Economic Development in the emirate where you plan to set up your business establishment. If you are setting up your business in a free zone, the respective Free Zone Authority will apply for a Commercial Trade License with the Department of Economic Development on your behalf.
How to Apply for a Commercial Trade License?
- You cannot have a name that contradicts your business activity. In simple terms, you cannot have the word Consulting as part of your company’s name if it is going to be involved in trading. It is always preferred that the name of your company reflects your business operations.
- A company name cannot start with terms like International, Global, or the Middle East or their translations. It also cannot have the name of any country or city in it, but nationalities are permitted. For example, you could have the term ‘Italian Restaurant’ as part of your name.

A good business setup consultant can run a search to find out if the name you have in mind is already registered to another firm. It makes sense to avoid similar-sounding names because you don’t want customers looking for Asian Salon to knock on your door if you run Asian Shipping.
Once you have decided on your unique name, you can lodge an application for a Commercial Trade License with the Department of Economic Development in the emirate where you are planning to launch your business. If you have an experienced company formation specialist in your corner, he/she can guide you correctly as to what additional approvals need to be secured.
